I got a job! I'll be working as a research coordinator with the Institute for Child Health Policy at the University of Florida. Of the many applications I submitted, several faculty positions, this job was #1 on my list. The reasons I wanted (and am SO happy about) this job:
1. It is in Florida
2. UF is a great school with resources (people and money) abound
3. The position is research without the pressure or politics of a faculty position
4. I'm very interested in the subject matter - pediatric health care
5. My research will have direct implications for policy change
6. I will work with an interdisciplinary team of physicians, psychologists, and economists
7. There is a lot of room for growth; they encourage taking classes, teaching, or pursuing my own projects
8. I will be learning the money and governmental side of pediatric health care (in addition to the psychology side I am already familiar with)
9. Work will be 9-5. No nights, no weekends, no looming papers haunting my every thought.
10. It gives me a real pay check
I begin on Feb 1st so it will be crunch time when I get back to visit Athens, find a place to live in Gainesville, and move. That brings me to my next important news - I'm coming back early! I leave on Tuesday the 15th and will land in Jax late that night. My plan is to head up to Athens on the 18th for a week or so and then back to FL to start work. I'm so excited!
In case you missed the title reference, click here. And shame on you, you should be familiar with all of the great works by Ms. Parton.
Yay! I think that's great news. I want a 9-5 job too! :)
ReplyDeleteWhy don't you have to write papers? I guess it's not that kind of position.
Well, we'll be happy to have you back stateside and would love to have you over to play and eat when you're here.

I will still write papers but I will do it during my work hours only. I will be primarily responsible for writing technical reports back to the government but then can work on empirical papers as much as I want.
ReplyDeleteYour house is top of the list, will probably come over the 19th or 20th!
A big congratulations, child. There's no place like home, Dorothy. RB
ReplyDeleteWhoot Whoot! Congratulations. Sounds like an awesome gig.
ReplyDeleteAnd, by the way, I love Dolly Parton but I didn't know that song. Thanks for the edification!
