Are you keen for a cuddle?

I've been taking notes on things that are different here. Most differences are subtle but some really catch me off guard. I'm sure I'll have several posts like this.

Some of the obvious:
1. Driving/walking on the left side. Luckily, I will not be driving so I don't have to figure this out. I do, however, walk a good bit and I still haven't been able to remember to look to my right for oncoming traffic first before crossing the street. I tend to cross streets slowly or when others are crossing so I think I'll be okay. It also takes a minute to think of what side of the road the tram will be on when I need to catch a ride.

2. The metric system and related ideas. I have to constantly try and convert kilometers to miles when thinking of distance, kilograms to pounds when thinking of weight, and Celsius to Farenheit for temperature. I thought I had temperature figured out, but I really have no idea how to easily convert it. Essentially, 1 degree C is equal to 33.8 F but every increase in C is an increase of approximately 2 F so..basically I'm just waiting for 27...80 degrees!.

Some non-obvious:
1. The paper - they use A4. Its more narrow than 8 1/2" and slightly longer than 11."  Maybe it will make my writing look longer...

2. The outlets and light switches. The switches are what they are but the outlets are funny. Not only are they a different male/female match but you have to turn them on to use them. Maybe it is a way to conserve energy?

A power outlet.

Some more wording differences:
1. Hire = Rent
2. Cheers = Thanks/thank you
3. City bath = Public pool
4. Mate =  Friend
5. Spanner  = wrench. (unless you mean allen wrench, that's an allen key or hex key)
6. Chase that up - look it up, or follow up
7. Keen = interested "are you keen to go for a run?"
8. Heaps = a large amount. "I have heaps of work to do"
9. Footy = Australian rules football
10. Gridiron = American football
11. Top-up = refill
12. Cuddle = a hug (can also mean our version of cuddle, but 'have a cuddle' generally means to hug)
13. Breaki = breakfast (in general, several things tend to be shortened and end in i or ie' - like tele or teli for telephone)
14. Mobile (with a long 'i') = cell phone
15. Toilet = bathroom/restroom
16. Take away = to-go "I'd like a burger for take away"
17. Pot or pot glass = 12 ounces of beer
18. Full stop = period "I have nothing else to say. Full stop"

An advertisement for a dinner - pizza and a 'pot' of beer.

  1. I hung out with some Australians in UT for a few days in a hostel and there were definitely times I couldn't understand their English. Thanks for the translations!

  2. By the way, we're watching an old Survivor season that was situated in the Australian Outback and one of the Aussies said "heaps." It made us think about this post. :)
